"The best thing is knowing that I will never kill or injure anyone."
Adam is a 66 year old retired reporter who still does some freelance work. Sometimes known as the Sage of Sussex, Adam lives with wife Sue and youngest daughter Elly in Hove. He lives in Hove and travels on foot, and by bike, train and bus.
Adam has access to a diesel Peugeot 305 owned by his wife, but has never owned a car or learned how to drive. He decided as a teenager that there were too many cars in his crowded part of England and that they were too dangerous. As a non-car owner, Adam cycles around 2,000 miles a year, walks 2,000 and runs about 200. The longest ride he ever did was 140 miles when he went to see his brother who ran a pub at Sutton Scotney near Winchester. His brother wasn't in the least surprised when he arrived. Adam has also cycled from home to Portsmouth and around the Isle of Wight.
The longest walk he has done (twice) was 52 miles from London to Brighton, and Adam finds walking a good means of transport in busy urban areas. Throughout the 44 years he was a reporter, Adam always walked or biked to work and did the same for getting about. On the whole it worked well but once he had to go to Bolney 20 miles away on a story and the bloke wasn't in.
Another time he went to see a Tory MP who had gone green and who lived at Blackboys north east of Lewes. He got so wet he had to change in a hedge to get dry. He once cycled to Wiston near Steyning to see the High Sheriff of West Sussex at his home: he jumped when Adam arrived because everyone else forewarned him of their approach by the crunch of car tyres on gravel. According to Adam, the best thing about not owning a car is "The knowledge that I will never kill or injure anyone." The worst thing is that it's hard to reach some places in the country.
The easiest thing to do as a non-car owner is to save money. Adam doesn't feel the effects much because he never owned a car, but reckons that the savings must be considerable. Adam says that some people are aghast that he does not drive but increasingly many are finding it a good idea. Adam suggests it's best to build your life around not having a car. He would never live anywhere that wasn't near a bus route or a train station. He also finds that walking and cycling keeps him fit. Adam uses buses a fair bit (and goes on them free now he is over 60), and he also enjoys train travel.
Adam's wife drives but likes walking (not cycling). She always takes a bus into town and they use trains for any long journey in the UK. According to Adam, "When she is old she will probably sell her car."
