"Owning a car is a ridiculous waste of money."

Adam Hart-Davis is a writer, photographer and broadcaster (find out more at www.Adam-Hart-Davis.org/)

Adam does as much work as he can from home, which is an old cider barn by a river in South Devon. He has two grown-up sons and three grandchildren, and lives with Dr Sue Blackmore, who has two children in their twenties. Adam has owned many cars, starting with a 1935 Austin 7, and, for one year, an E-type Jag. He sold his last car around twelve years ago, and now normally gets around by bike and train, although Sue has a car which he uses occasionally.

Adam gave up his car because he found he was using it less than once a week. At the time, owning a car cost about £2,000 a year -  before doing any driving. So it cost £50 every time he took it out of the garage. Taxis cost only about £10 for the type of trips he was doing, so he concluded that owning a car was "a ridiculous waste of money."  Having given up his car, Adam is now saving this money and spends it on other things.

Adam is a firm believer in the bike as a means of transport. In fact, he owns four cycles. Adam says that he probably wouldn't go back to owning a car, he would "rather do without one" - particularly as cycling is fun - and "in London the most reliable way of getting about is by bike."

According to Adam, the best thing about not owning a car is saving money and improving health, while the worst thing is when he sometimes has to travel 20 or 30 miles across country. He also says that, without a car, "Shopping for the family is harder….but more fun."  Adam says that when he tells people he doesn't own a car "some people find it hard to believe."

As for Adam's top tips for living the car-free life? "Live reasonably near shops and a railway station."
