"The unbeatably thoughtful rhythm of walking"

Arthur Smith is a comedian who lives in South London with his partner Beth. More about Arthur at www.arthursmith.co.uk

Arthur travels mostly by public transport or on foot, and the only vehicle to which he has access is his bike. Partner Beth also owns a bike.

Arthur has never owned a car. Why not? He can't drive. Moreover, "I always felt constrained and a little sick in cars." Arthur says that the best thing about not owning a car is that he does not harm the planet and "I don't have to do all the stuff associated with cars."  As for the worst thing about not owning a car?  "Nothing."

Some things are easier to do without owning a car. In Arthur's case, he says that he is "an expert on trains."  When he tells people that he doesn't own a car, Arthur says that "they are flummoxed and thrown."

As for top tips for living without a car, Arthur's poetic response is "Remember the unbeatably thoughtful rhythm of walking."

Arthur says that he saves money by not owning a car. So what happens to the money he saves? "I smoke fags."
